We will be in Savannah on Easter weekend and at St. Simon's later that week. Is this the season for soft shell crabs? Where to eat them?? What other seafood will be in season? Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, soft shell season doesn't kick in until summer.

Actually, you may be about right for timing this -- the Beaufort SC (Port Royal) soft shell crab festival is April 21 so there should be soft shells available when you're here (unless there's some kind of fishing season limit I'm not aware of). The GA/FL shrimp season opened today.

I checked the SC DNR website and it confirms an April soft shell crab run:

"During the spring, usually early April, there is a "run" of peeler crabs that lasts for about two weeks. At this time fishermen will target the female crabs that are molting into mature crabs after the winter dormancy. These crabs can be caught in "peeler pots" which are crab traps in which one or two large males are used as bait to attract the females which are ready to mate. The peeler crabs are held for a short time in shedding tanks until the molt. After molting, the soft shell crabs are removed from the water and refrigerated for sale."

In more general terms, Epicurious states soft shells are "in season from April to mid-September (with a peak in June and July)." That June/July peak was probably why I was thinking the season didn't start until later.

Right now they're catching wahoo, mahi and tuna offshore. Restaurants such as Tubby's that buy from local (sport)fishermen should have them in good supply. I grilled some excellent blackfin tuna last night.

Any up dates on Georgia soft shell crabs. I've heard May is when they begin. How bout Darien area? What is the going price? Where can you buy them?
