Chef Ben Roche, of Moto here in Chicago, had a recipe for doughnut pancakes with strawberry-coffee sauce in an issue of Gourmet a few months back. I was wondering if anyone has made them and what you thought of them.

You can find a copy of the recipe at http://www.nbc5.com/newslinks/10020379/detail.html

Thanks!

Vey interesting! I had a VERY similar dessert at a restaurant here in Boston (Gargoyles) a few weeks ago. The "pancakes" were fine, they did taste like donuts but didn't have the best part (to me) which is texture. It was topped with a "Strawberry Coffee Salad" which seemed just to be sliced strawberries marinated in coffee, and which I didn't care for. The coffee soaked into the pancakes, and since I'm not a big coffee fan, I didn't like that so much. And I thought the coffee flavor ruined the strawberries.

I like coffee, but I think the syrup sounds better than the fruit and coffee only marinated together. I'm afraid these will be cloying and greasy, but he served them at Moto, so I am assuming they were good and popular. He says not to use Krispy Kremes, which is fine because I think they are disgusting, but some glazed yeast donuts from my local grocery store seems like they will work fine. I think I will have to give them a try. Something different.
