Just called the old Neath's number. We have a gift certificate for Neath's from my parents and I really freaked out when I saw your post last night (thanks for the head's up). The guy who answered told me about the new restaurant, Bacaro, that will be taking over the space (they are shooting for May 2007). He said Bacaro will honor Neath's gift certificates. He said that Neath is closing and will re-open elsewhere because he wants to spend more time with his family right now. The reason is NOT because the restaurant was struggling or because Providence is "not ready" for his food.

thanks for the followup. i'm not from the providence area, but we're coming down there (from ny hudson valley) for a couple days in late april, and the places i was gunning for for reservations were neath's and gracie's. made the (online) reservations for gracie's, but was hugely disappointed about neath's closing (when i called) after the great reviews and their exciting menu...

well, there's a few other places i'll be checking out, and will post on the board after our trip is complete with thoughts on the places.

No!!! I really liked that restaurant and am very disappointed to learn that it's now closed. I've been there several times for special occasion dinners - they had such great food and ambience.

I always thought his food was too good for Providence. He should have opened in Boston or NYC. He never really had the numbers to sustain the business. Great food, but high end Asian fusion is a bit too fussy for the RI demographic. (Plus, Neath thought the Al Forno hype could be recreated, much like Empire had, but there's a lot to be said for being in the right place at the right time . . .)

          AAAAHHHH!!!! :( ...

That was my favorite restaurant in town... Do we have any outstanding high-end restaurant that *isn't* Italian, New American, or a steakhouse at this point? :( ...

Oh, what a bummer. I hadn't been there in a while, but like it very much, and think the owner is a terrific guy. Coincidentally, I was just driving west on 195 thru the city today and had a thought to get there soon (husband has never been). Wonder if he's planning another place or what.
