[Erving, MA] The Smoking Hippo

After skiing at Berkshire East in Charlemont, eating dinner at the Starlite Diner was a regular stop on the way home. The Starlite Diner closed, but a neat BBQ spot opened in its place. The Smoking Hippo didn't do any major renovations, and they even kept some of the same menu items like the sweet potatoe fries and the slices of pie and cake. My favorite waitress, Becca, still works there. I haven't tried the BBQ offerings because pulled chicken isn't a regular menu item, but I enjoy all of the other food I've ordered. On Saturday, I had fish & chips and a delicious chicken and pepper soup. It wasn't spicy but the combination of chicken, red peppers, and carrots was delicious. I substituted sweet potatoe fries for the regular fries. Everything from appetizers to main dishes are great. The new owner and management team likes to walk around and get feedback. I've eaten here 3x so far. Give it a shot if you travel this route.

  1. I'm really glad to hear you liked it - I always see it on my journey on Rt 2 and never get a chance to stop. Maybe I'll make time next time!

Sadly, it closed down a couple months ago. A shame, they had added really attractive signage.
