Ice Cream Wedding Cake: help me find one [moved from L.A. board]
Hi,
we are getting married July 7 in Sequoia National Park. My fiancee and I would love to have an ice cream wedding cake, but are having trouble finding someone who can do it. Can anyone provide suggestions?
thank you
This may be difficult since a wedding cake usually sits there during the reception, and I would imagine it would melt. You would also need a refridgerator large enough to accomodate the cake until it is eaten.

I agree with WHills that an icecream cake is problematic if you want the cake to be on display, as is typical. But one wedding I went to served icecream sandwiches, along with other desserts and regular wedding cake, and they were a big hit! It was fun because they were butlered around at a time in the evening when people like to stand and chat and dance, rather than sit in their seats. Sorry I don't have cake suggestions, but consider ice cream sandwiches and a regular cake as an alternative.

I was at a wedding in August where the whipped cream icing melted into the groom jello cake (Don't ask) and it all ended up a huge sloppy pink mess on the floor. If you are getting married outdoors where there is no large freezer (a fridge won't work), there is no way to keep ice cream from melting.

I guess a small freezer with a glass door on display is the answer, but who's got that kind of money and time to plan the logistics?
As for cake ideas, it's not very helpful but wouldn't any place that makes ice cream cakes be able to make a three layer cake frosted completely in white? You can add fresh flowers as garnish to avoid cheesy birthday cake colors and piping.
Alternatively, you could buy a fake cake to use as the display (like bakeries have), and have a large sheet cake of ice cream cake waiting in the freezer to be served after the display cake is "taken away for slicing." Sell the fake cake on ebay after youre wedding.

You're probably asking on the wrong board. The average temperature in July there could be 90 degrees.
You might start by calling a Baskin Robbins in Visalia (one hour drive from Sequoia NP).

I know that Tai of Scoops can make ice cream cakes, and he might be able to accomodate a large special order like yours.

Thank you all for the great suggestions. I don't think we even considered that the cake had to be on display, but then again, it's not a conventional wedding, so maybe we don't need to go to that trouble. I will inquire about where we can store it during the party. Can PseudoNerd, please provide location or contact info for Tai of Scoops? Google didn't produce any search results.
Thanks again!

I know that Ben and Jerry's throws ice cream parties. If it's not a conventional wedding, you can have them come out to the event and serve a variety of flavors after dinner.

yeah, Google would only really help if you use the old name, which is Taicecream:

We have been as some weddings where they had display cake that was not real. The real question is where and when are you getting married in the park? Do they have a resteraunt in the park that can accomodate your need?
HAve you spoken with your caterer?
I went to the park website, try contacting a park ranger and ask them what they might know of:
Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks
47050 Generals Highway
Three Rivers, CA 93271-9700
By Phone:
1-559-565-3341 for recorded information or access park staff
By Fax:
1-559-565-3730
Good Luck.

Where do you want to purchase the cake? Try your local board for suggestions of a supplier. Or ask on the Calif board with a specific area in the title. Any supplier of premium ice cream usually also makes cakes. (I think you can do better than BR). ("Best Ice Cream shop near.......?") and go from there. I know there have been discussions about ice creams and frozen custards in the Fresno area.
Shouldn't be all that warm at the higher elevations, but getting the cake there intact from the valley floor could prove to be a problem.
Dry ice and one of those huge styrofoam shipping containers that are used to ship fresh fish (not a reused one!) might be your answer. Have the cake made in a shape to fit the container. Why not a non-traditional shape? Contact a local restaurant or butcher to find a source for the styro box.
Assign the transport and care task to a trusted guest, and let them take that wedding day worry from your shoulders.

I'm getting married in August and am absolutely DETERMINED to have an ice-cream wedding cake! Here's what I'm planning so far: My parents have a small-yet-big-enough freezer I'll store it in until we serve it, and until then...I'm taking a picture of it and blowing it up about 11x14 and putting the print in a gilded frame with a fancy little sign thing that says "It's coming!" or something like that, to let guests know the ice-cream is on its way.
I'm all ABOUT the non-conventional wedding, so good luck with yours! Don't let anyone tell you you can't do what you want simply because it isn't usual or it's "problematic". There's ways around things! Congrats on your big day!
