SD Hounding Looking For "Best" of SF

Looking for fine dining, not pretentious (no jackets required preferably, but willing to compromise), romantic, and unique dining expereince for two, with wife. Prefer French/Cal/Italian, near Financial District/Union Sq./SOMA, but will have car.

Was considering Foreign Cinema, but see a lot of negative posts. Can't get into Quince, Chez Panisse, not interested in Rubicon, Masa.

I haven't been to Foreign Cinema in some time, so perhaps it has gone downhill since the last time I was there (last May). But I always like it for brunch. The last time I was there I had a wonderful fromage blanc with berries and almonds, drizzled with honey. Simple, yet wonderful (they're not as good as CP, but I think its the same general idea: simple is best). On a nice day, it is quite enjoyable to sit outside on the patio with a cup of coffee.

Oh, and maybe A16 as well? I haven't been since the new chef came in, but its worth a thought.

The food at A16 is great but it's not a very romantic place.

I thought Foreign Cinema went downhill two years or more ago. I keep seeing it mentioned and wonder if it has improved? I do like the place, it's has it's own style and charm that no other place has.

        I would go for Acquerello.

          How about Coi or Boulevard

Don't worry about dress codes. The only restaurant in the area that requires jackets is the French Laundry.

            You might try

            Antica Trattoria
            Acquerello
            Boulevard
