Sunset Bakery on 9th Ave. -- still good?

The GG Bakery thread made me think of Sunset Bakery. When I lived near there ('95-'00) I used to get their bao, especially ham & onion and custard to take to the office. It made me very popular with my co-workers.

Now I live out in the boonies of CoCo County, and I'm wondering if Sunset Bakery is still worth a visit if I find myself in the City.

  1. Is that the one on 9th and Judah? If it is, I'm not sure if it's there anymore. I drive by there quite often and have seen it changed several times (remodel, name change, menu change). I'm not sure if it's the same owner either.

It's still there -- same owners and everything. I like their white cake with strawberries and cream and their paper-wrapped cupcakes. I'm not sure it's worth the drive out to the inner sunset, though...

    2. They have terrific BBQ Pork Buns, Cocktail Bins (filled with buttery coconut) and cream filled buns (a sweet bun split and filled with real whipped cream...but a little denser and dusted with coconut on the outside).

      1. Yes, its still there. We order cakes there for birthdays and other events. They generally receive solid reviews.

        1. This place sounds good to me for Strawberry Cake & Egg Custard Tarts.

          Has anyone tried them lately?

My husband made a stop there for me today. The char siu bao was very good, baked just right (where the dough isn't wet on the bottom). There was a good balance between the filling and the dough, no red gelatin-like substance, no strange chewy unknown pieces, and not too salty or sweet. He also got the egg custard, which was very good.

I haven't tried any of the other places in SF, so can't offer you a comparison. Just happened to be staying with friends just a few blocks away.
