Chavella's on Classon Avenue
Just had take out from this newish spot on Classon Avenue between Prospect Place and Park Place. I'm surprised it hasn't shown up on this board yet.
I'm not great with reviews, but we were really pleased with our order of tacos and a tostada. The ingredients were very fresh, and there was some wonderful fresh flavor that is usually lacking from Mexican food. Smokiness, tanginess, creaminess of crema fesca and queso fresco.
Anyhow, it's a lovely little spot, cozy decor. There are these little pots on the table filled with pieces of gum, in flavors like eucalyptus.
I'm so bummed that I had already eaten dinner. We'll be back ASAP for a full meal.

Chavella's is excellent- my go to restaurant and one of the two best Mexican in the city, along with De Mole. They specialize in different things; De Mole does good vegetarian dishes, but I stay away from meat there.
Chavella's makes great tamal, great shrimp, and the homemade mole is very authentic and good.
Plus, its all ridiculously cheap. -

They make a great brunch. If you order a coffee, they bring you a bread product to dunk in it. If I liked french toast then I would definitely try theirs. It looks and sounds great. I like a savory breakfast. The cactus salad, egg, and bean dish (pictured below) is so tasty and satisfying. For dinner, the Plato Don can feed two hungry eaters, and the elotes callejeros are great. I cannot recommend the pollo al horno. It has little flavor and an unappealing color.

re: kaydeesquared
also just tried chavellas:
i plan to go back but for cheap mexican i was satisfied with my first experience. the beef taco was delicious: tender slices of marinated beef, chopped cilantro and onions. the guac was solid. i was not as enthusiastic about the bit of fish taco that i tried. the corn with alioli was overcooked. and my tamale could have been heated better but was decent. all in all--it might be one of the better mex places i have tried.

Went last night. The corn chips were fried in peanut oil? The chile rellenos a bit overkill on chunks of unmelted queso fresco inside. Very sad underrepresentation of cilantro and lime. The fish tacos were tacos with fish in them, but no crema, and definitely a disappointment if you were expecting baja-style. The horchata was cloyingly sweet and not cinammon-y enough. The mole was also too sweet though there was an interesting layering of flavors going on underneath that. The gum was fun, and the location certainly was cozy/cramped. Still, ingredients were fresh and the tamale was decent, and I guess what amazed me most was that it was a healthy rendition of Mexican food. Can't beat the prices and will go back again to try some other things on the menu.

I agree! We've had delivery from Chavella's, twice, and we love the food. My husband who worked as a cook in Mexico and is very picky, finds the food authentic and made with care. On the phone they are lovely as well. There are so few good places to eat in this area of Crown Heights, so we are thrilled. Can't wait until they start serving brunch!

So nice to finally get a response about this place. I can't believe no one else is posting?! We've almost worked our way through the whole menu, sometimes ordering three times in a week.
I wish the tacos had a little more filling, and that they served a little more fresh cilantro on the side. But I'm just picky...-
re: Sarah McC
I actually find the tacos to be too big. I wish they were a bit smaller (and accordingly priced, of course) so I could be satisfied with two--I like having variety! So far I think that the tacos are just slightly too small for a meal alone, but too big to have two. Really tasty though, looking forward to going back soon.
