30th Bday Dinner - Veritas, EMP, Cru or ?

Hey everyone,

Celebrating a 30th bday dinner for my boyfriend, and want to go for a delicious meal. Was thinking of the above restaurants, unless there's anything else that stands out. Prefer to stay downtown.

How about Bouley? Had a birthday dinner for a friend last fall that was truly amazing. Probably the best meal I've had in NYC (haven't been to Le Bernardin or Per Se).

Another thought would be Mas. Definitely one of the hidden gems in NYC. Outstanding food and wine with great farmhouse ambiance.

Between those three, I'd go with EMP for food, Veritas for ambiance. Skip Cru; the food is excellent, but not on a level with those two.

I have not been to Cru, but both EMP and Veritas are favorites of ours. Between those two, it depends on exactly what you are looking for. But you can't go wrong by choosing either one.

EMP: Chef Daniel Humm's French-inspired, very creative cuisine is sensational! There are three menus to choose from, including the fabulous Gourmand tasting dinner. There's an excellent wine list; service is friendly and professional; and the huge space is gorgeous!

Veritas: Chef Scott Bryan's New American cuisine is not particularly complicated but always solidly prepared and delicious. Unlike EMP, there is only one menu -- the 3-course prix-fixe. The wine list is, of course, one of the most extraordinary in the city. Service is pleasant and professional. The space is the antithesis of EMP's, i.e., small dining room with minimalist decor that is soothing and has understated elegance. (Note: If you choose to go here, be sure you're seated in the dining room, not the front/bar area.)
