For the love of tartufi and Tignanello ...

I recently traded Florence for Boston, and am still learning which Boston markets will best accommodate my ingredient needs (broadly based on a Tuscan kitchen).

After reading previous posts, I guess that Dave's and Capone's are best for fresh pasta. I'd like to find great fresh egg fettuccine in particular, should anyone have a particular recommendation.

Also, although they're out of season, I'm hoping to find a reliable truffle source, if not for now, for next fall. Savenor's has been mentioned. Has anyone ever had a good bottled truffle experience?

    Sorry to hear about your (IMO) geographical downgrade. Formaggio Kitchen is probably your best bet.

      Yup, it is. Formaggio also has some really nice dried pastas, there's one from Switzerland that is amazing. I bought a black truffle there that friends raved about, but I must confess, it was nothing like the truffles I had in Florence two seasons ago.

      In fact, finding similar ingredients after my travels to Italy was really disheartening. Fresh egg pasta? Just not the same. At all. It seems many have their theories - different water, different, flour, different eggs - about why it's not comparable. I've not at all been impressed with the fresh pastas I've bought here, though they are certainly quite fine. (If you find one, please post!)

      It was hard for me to find good arugula, too, but Formaggio carries an awesome organic arugula.

        I think it's the eggs. The yolks in Italy are almost orange -- lends a beautiful color to the fresh pasta.

        to the OP -- I've purchased truffle oil and truffle salt at formaggio and enjoyed both .. also Prezza does a truffle dish if you really need it. Check out Salumeria Italiana in the North End for other groceries, especially the olive oil from Badia Coltibuono. Not quite as nice as having it on their terrace but it will help you adjust.

      It's a bit of a challenge to replace what you've lost in Firenze, but I'd suggest Monica's on Salem St. in the North End for fresh fettucine. It's surprisingly expensive, $6.95/lb. I believe, but the quality is very good. Also, Salumeria Italiano is a good bet for some of the other foodstuffs you'll be missing (though it's also quite expensive for what it is). If you can head a bit out of town, Marty's Liquors on Washington St. has a great selection of italian olive oils, balsamics, and other goodies at the best prices around.
