I am looking for a place for dinner around Fieldston and Riverdale. The two places I've found so far are Beccofino and Riverdale Garden. Anyone know these places? Any other suggestions? Not looking for red sauce Italian or Asian. Thanks in advance....

It's just a short trip down Mosholu Parkway to Arthur Ave. That's where we when we visit friends in Riverdale.

Beccofino is a decent neighborhood Italian place; it's not just a red sauce joint, but if you're going for non-red sauce Italian in this area, head for Arthur Ave and try for a table at Roberto's (no reservations and long waits on Friday and Saturday night you go before 5:30 or after 9:00).

Riverdale Garden is contemporary American/Continental which was one of two restaurants mentioned in the recent Michelin Guide (the other, BTW, was Roberto's). This place has pretensions and is pricey for the area. Sometimes it's as good as it aspires to be - other times not. We've had both good meals and so-so experiences there, although friends have reported that they are consistently good lately; we haven't been there in a while. The one dish I had there that springs to minds was an excellent lamb steak. You can check out their website for more information: www.riverdalegarden.com

Editorial correction - that should be "one of two Bronx restaurants".

Depending on where in Riverdale, and my directions get murky the further above 215th Street I get, if you don't mind heading south down Broadway a bit into Inwood, there is an excellent Moroccan bistro on Broadway and 207th, the Park Terrace Bistro. The mezze are really incredibly delicious, and every tagine special I've had has been outstanding...steer clear of the Fifteenth Century Couscous, it looks tempting and spectacular on the menu, and is lackluster on the plate (my couscous was dry as dry can be, no sign of saffron cream!). From the generic name and even more generic exterior you'd never know what to expect, but inside it's like the Casbah.

Totally agree on all counts, including the "steer clear" part. The chef is Moroccan, and knows what he's doing with the tagines - the lamb shank is particularly good.

Three suggestions, with the caveats that (1) I don't live there (but visit non-cooking relatives there frequently--eliminating Asian from the options is really holding me back!) and (2) I wouldn't order anything terribly elaborate at any of them. In order of preference:

Park Place at Mosholu Avenue and Broadway; Jake's Steakhouse on Broadway not far from the 242nd Street station (near Burger King); and Madison's on Riverdale Avenue at 261st Street, across from the Riverdale Steakhouse.
