El Pollo Unico - Pasadena?

ElsieDee Mar 21, 2007 03:19 PM

I drive past the strip mall where this is located (Lake Ave. and Orange Grove, I think - if not, within a block or two north on Lake) several times a week and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations (or reservations) about their offerings.

That's funny, I drive by and wonder about it as well. Never ventured in, though! You are correct, it is on the NE corner of Lake and Orange Grove (7-11 strip mall).

It's not a bad alternative to EPLoco, but if it weren't close by I wouldn't bother (and I haven't since that one visit). That mall is such a chore to get in and out of anyway...

We got a chicken and a couple of sides; I'd have to go back and look at the menu to spur my memory of exactly what those were, though if they'd been either outstanding or awful I'm sure I'd remember it. The chicken was overcooked, not fatally, but the breast meat was immediately consigned to sandwich duty with LOTS of mayo.

Agree with Will . . . not even worth a detour. Just decent if you're near mid-Pasadena and in the mood for chicken. A step up from the chains, but can be inconsistent. I live nearby and go once in a while, but I can't really wax poetic about it. I think 80% of the attraction is the really low prices.

It's absolutely the best, far superior and cheaper than the pallid El Pollo Loco. I live in Australia now and it's one of the few places that's on my must visit list when back in Pasadena. Please, continue to be put off by the strip mall so it doesn't become too "successful."

I haven't been myself because of habit but I plan to. It is the best kept secret in the construction industry. Will, are you referring to it's new location on the west side of Lake? Certainly a lot more accessible than when it was across the street.

What Will is referring to (I think) is the parking lot that is extremely tight, and hard to get out of. It's just the local chicken place. If you need a cheap way to feed a few people, it's decent. It can get a little messy. Not a destination place, but more of a "you work in the area and need a few more options" kind of place.

What to get? their chicken of course, and whatever sides you like... none of them are particularly good.

I was actually referring to its old location back behind the 7-11. That mall should not even exist, and why it still does is to my mind a major failure of planning. As for the new location, I haven't gone there, but although it's a big improvement it still gets snarled. What I remember of the food frankly makes it not worth my trouble.

Just order the chicken, everything else is meh.
