Hi - I'm making Hoppin' John for dinner and, since we're burned-out on cornbread and its variants, was thinking about making a savoury monkey bread as a side (in addition to greens). But, um, I've never actually made monkey bread and am hoping that someone here can give me some pointers (or a recipe?) for it.

This will probably make some chowhounds flip their lids, but a friend of mine has this on the regular rotation at social gatherings and it's always a hit.

It's basically this recipe (http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,194,146187-233196,00.html) but she mixes some Lipton onion soup mix in with the butter.

This seems like a good foundation to start with. I can think of a lot of great variations (use roasted garlic instead of cheese, rosemary and olive oil instead of butter and onion soup mix and provolone instead of cheddar, etc)....I just haven't gotten around to trying to make any :-)

Here's my favorite (by way of a cookbook created by the Willie Vincent Circle Women's Missionary Union of the Blue Eye Baptist Church, Lincoln, Alabama--so it ought to go pretty well with Hoppin' John!)

Take yor fave bread dough (homemade or storebought). Separate into balls. Roll each ball in pesto. Chuck them all together in a pan (it looks nice in a tube pan, but you can use any kind). Bake.
