Husband and I went out for BBQ last night and man, am I'm feeling it today...too much heavy food and fried food. Pulled pork, baby back ribs, housemade potato chips, onion rings...you get the picture. Today I've had one slice of cinnamon toast, a small salad with light dressing and water, water, water. I'm starting to come around and have visions of broiled fish for tonight.

What are your tried and true food hangover remedies?

It all depends on what food I'm recovering from. After heavy meals (Xmas, Thanksgiving) or alot of fried food I crave sushi. After vast quantities of meat (ribs, steak) I want salads. And waffles always make me feel better. And of course water and exercise.

Add the juice from half a lemon into each glass of water you drink. And drink a LOT of water. I usually stick to raw fruit, especially apples and melon (when it is in season). Eschew all things salty for a few days.

Of course, the best approach is prevention: to stop eating the second you start to feel full, no matter how delicious the food is, but we all go overboard occasionally.

At such times, I rely on Italian amari, taken neat or briefly chilled over ice and strained, immediately after an overindulgent meal as an aid to digestion. Far and away the most effective, to my constitution, is Fernet Branca, an Italian potable bitters, Its very strong, very bitter flavor is not to everone's tastes, but you can just think of it as medicine. I used to think it tasted like poison, but have come to love it, no doubt in part a Pavlovian response because I know it will make me feel better.

I sought Fernet out about 20 years ago, when my previous favorite digestif, Jägermeister, went from being a congnoscento's after-dinner drink to a frat-boy and metal-dude shot of choice. Its marketing in the US is a great industry success story, but it became kind of painful to order it in public, a good way to get carded, like ordering candy-flavored Schnapps. Still, it's a very effective digestif if you can't find anything else.

Other bitters that I like include Becherovka (from the Czech Republic), Unicum (from Hungary), and a bunch of Italians, including Campari (though I generally prefer it before dinner, and in cocktails like the Negroni), Cynar, Averna, Montenegro, and Ramazzotti. A few dashes of non-potable bitters (Angostura, Peychaud's, Fee's Orange, etc.) in soda water is also a fine digestive tonic.

As others have noted, lots of water, fresh air, and light exercise are excellent day-after remedies.

This was me today after too much Korean BBQ (notably the pork) last night. It also didn't help that we went out for froyo afterwards for desert. So what did I do today: a 30 minute run first thing this morning, a big cup of coffee and plenty of water, plain oatmeal w/raisins for breakfast, asparagus soup, an apple and 2 wasa crispbreads for lunch and broiled halibut and steamed broccoli for dinner. Even now-I STILL feel like a stuffed pig.

If I'm recovering from a grease or meat fest, I will always spend the next day eating steamed greens (kale, collards), raw watery vegetables, and brown rice because I won't feel like anything else!

So in a nutshell foods that are fibre, water, and nutrient packed get me feeling better :)
