Amazing Sushi in Honolulu
I've lived in LA for over 3 years and have become a serious sushi-hound (you can find me at Katsu-Ya at least once a week). I never thought I'd find better fish than the amazing meals I've had here -- until I went to Honolulu last week.
Thanks to a friendly hotel concierge, my wife and I were treated to the best sushi we've ever tasted at a little hole-in-the-wall place called Sushi Sasabune. I don't know the area well, but I think it's in Waikiki (1417 S. King Street -- 808.947.3800). Like many places here in LA, Sasabune is one of those "trust me" joints that prefer you forget the menu and let the chef send out what he thinks you should be eating.
We put aside our "what if he serves us uni?" worries, ordered two big glasses cold sake and put our stomachs in Sasabune's capable hands. Each dish was more amazing than the next. Every cut of fish was fresh, flavorful and just melted in our mouths -- yellow tail, salmon with sweet kelp, snapper, mackrel, jack fish, sea scallop, even sweet shrimp (and I hate sweet shrimp). I know I'm forgetting some names, but I was too fat and happy (not to mention drunk on sake) to remember...
If you're in Honolulu, give this place a try!

I was just going back through my list of favorite topics, and found this again. I wanted to mention for rocamar that the original Sushi Sasabune is in LA (disciple #1 went to Honolulu, #2 went to NYC more recently), and I wanted to mention for everyone else that Sushi Sasabune is the best sushi I've ever had.

Sasabune rocks. Live for sushi as well - had a few stellar meals out there when I lived there. One thing stands out in my memory though from Sasabune. Got monkfish liver (think it's still called ankimo when it's not pate) and instead of the pate form, it was an intact piece of monkfish liver. It was awesome. Still want that several years later.
