Las Vegas - a few new reviews during march madness

spent an entire week in vegas - partial biz, partial march madness festivities with friends, including the annual ( 10 + years ) march madness golf tourney. enjoyed some new restaurants, went to some of the usual spots - some pics but sadly, about 10 pics didn't make it...i think i need a new camera !!

A quick update on some of my regular stops - Changs for dim sum...they've dropped a few notches in my book and for my SO, who is chinese and loves her dim sum, she doesn't want to go back there...it's a bummer because we can walk to the place from my condo !!
Capriotti's - i brought sandwiches to some customers at my bar....they were very appreciative...i wish i could walk to their store ! Black bear diner - after a long night of poker with SO , we slept in until 2 pm....did not eat for over 15 hours...and so...the bear was hungry , so it was either black bear diner or hash house agogo - we opted for black bear because it's much closer to the pad - and again, well-prepared diner food - no flash, no foo-foo here...it hit the spot !!

as to the new - hue thai, burger bar, fix, bbq masters, carnegie deli, the fat greek grill.

Hue Thai - finally convinced SO to try this place - she loves all asian food, but she had a hard time believing that an asian restuarant would make sandwiches....i'm a big fan of the so cal / SGV banh mi places and hue thai has been recommended by my fellow hounds - overall, i liked the place, ordered the house special banh mi ( basically, has a little of everything - shredded pork, bbq pork, pate, and of course...the veggies ..on a fresh baquette...and yes, they bake them on premises...you see them cooking ! ) it cost $2.99 - defintely higher than SGV and the baquette is a little smaller but i think hue's might have a little more between the bun - it was a very good sandwich...could have used a little mre daikon for some more "bite" but overall, it was delicious.

SO had pho...can't remember which...and we also shared a "hotpot " dish...cat fish....both dishes were very good...the sauce for the catfish was addicting...spicy..tasted great with rice. we also order a fruit smoothie that surprisingly was "pre-made" - it was made in rosemead so it made me wonder if Hue's has a location in SGV...i need to research that. pics of SO's food

BBQ Master - Decatur, just south of Sahara...it's a 24 hour bar/grill. I frequently drive by the place and i've been waiting for the right moment to convincer SO to go...she was up for it...we hit it for lunch.

SO had the beef rib platter - i believe it was $18 for 4 ribs...i ordered the 3 meat platter $22 or so, got the links, pulled pork and the brisket...sadly, the pic of SO's food didn't work...the ribs had that great smoky smell that i love , but the meat was a little dry...i say this about the bbq places i frequent in so cal...you gotta time it right...hit these places after the food is taken off the smoker or the grill...the longer it is after the meat is cooked the bigger the risk...so i am not going to knock the place...but i tell ya...i was expecting those "flintstone "sized beef ribs,,,these guys were just a tad larger than a baby back rib....is that even possible ?!?!?

as to my plate...the links were decent...SO loved them, the pulled pork, a little chewy, but i liked the smokiness and the "pink ring" supporting that the meat was smoked for an extended period. same goes for the brisket....definitely more tender than the pork...the sides were decent - the cole slaw had a strong garlic taste - as a garlic fan, i'm fine with that. bbq beans ok, the sweet potato fries...very good, the onion rings...ok - the server kindly brought ranch dressing with the onion rings without my asking, and she brought a trio of bbq sauces...i liked all of them...so really liked the spicy...a very strong chile taste to it..i will give the place another try before i give a thumbs up or down but i did feel the price was a little high for what you get

The Fat Greek Grill - located on decatur and flamingo - in the same shopping center as makano and metro pizza. SO and i planned to hit Makano for sunday brunh - but they were closed !! i saw the greek grill in past visits to the shopping center...what the heck, let's give it a try - a simple looking cafe - probably seats around 30 people, we w ere probably the only "non-greeks" in the place...went with the standards - started with some stuffed grape leaves ( 50 cents each ) hummus ( $3.99 ) and spanakopita (sp ? ) then we ordered the "philly style" pitas - i went witht he chicken, SO had the beef/lamb combo - what made it philly style ? it included peppers, onions, mushrooms, cheese and a spicy sauce....i think it should have been called philly/buffalo style because the sauce was a very spicy buffalo wing style sauce...the cheese - the menu said american cheese...i think it was cheez whiz...or some sort of cheese sauce....boy was it spicy !! but we both liked it - especially the beef/lamb...the meat was soooootender...$5.99...it was worth it.

we loved the hummus, the grape leaves ok, the spanakopita could have had less dough and/or more spinach filling...SO also had an interesting soda that we noticed everyone was drinking in the cafe - i forget the name but it was a bright green color, having a licorice taste and the label said it was flavored with tarragon ...interesting stuff !!!

next time i'll get the beef/lamb pita without the buffalo sauce !!!
