I've been to Bistro Bella Vita numerous times and it's always been wonderful. It's not new, but it's right downtown:

    Bistro Bella Vita
    44 Grandville Ave. SW
    Grand Rapids, MI
    616.222.4600
    www.bistrobellavita.com

Here's another place downtown, but I haven't been there, just found its info on the internet:

    Tre Cugini
    120 Monroe Center NW
    Grand Rapids, MI 49503
    (616) 235-9339
    www.trecugini.com

Another Italian place I haven't been to is out near the airport:

    Noto's
    6600 28th St. SE
    Grand Rapids, MI 49546
    (616) 493-6686
    www.notosoldworld.com

Again, though, if you've never been to Bistro Bella Vita (or even if you've already been there), that's where I would head first.

Tuscan Express, actually, I think they may have renamed to just "Tuscan" on 28th near Cascade is a cozier alternative if you want something small and want to have the chef stop by your table.

Tuscan Express is gone. Notos and Tre Cugini are pretty pricey. We've been going to Florentine on Kalamazoo just north of 44th street and have had some good meals. Nothing fancy but the price is right. Try the "tour of italy" w/ lasagna, cheese manicotti and spinach ravioli. *mmmmmmmmmmm*

Thanks for the updates, prison chef. What is your opinion of Vitale's? Have read good things about it on this board. Have you been there?
