Fantastic bottled Tomato Sauce

Food Guy 905 Mar 16, 2007 02:17 PM

Loving to cook and not always having the time I have tried many prepared tomato sauces.
Most taste like over reduced tomato sludge. On a recent trip to one of my fave grocery stores
Highland farms I discovered thier own brand Basil Gourmet sauce.Wow! It tastes great.Tomatoes, basil, onions, olive oil, canola oil, hot peppers, sea salt and garlic are the only ingriedents. Having worked in many Italian restaurants, I can easily say it is better than most of their tomato sauces. Give Highalnd farms a try as they carry the best ethnic and domestic variety of brands I have ever seen...Food guy 905

Sounds great. Where is Highland Farms? I don't think I've ever seen it.

A side bar item: try Unico Premium Collection San Marzano canned tomatoes. These are vastly better than their run-of-the-mill canned variety and usually cost the same.Often on sale at No Frills.Comparable quality to pricey imported brands at less than 1/2 the cost.

quiet right Kagemusha...San Mazano tomatoes are the Rolls Royce of sauce tomatoes...something to do with the volcanic soild they're grown in...next time you make a sauce give 'em a try and taste the difference

You're right about San Marzano being a great tomato but in order for it to be a DOP (Denominazione de Origine Protetto) or true San Marzano they must be grown and processed in the region of San Marzano. While the Unico product is very good it is "San Marzano type" and not grown in that region but in the area of Leamington and Dresden Ontario just like any other local canned tomato. I believe they are grown from seedlings of the same strain as the San Marzano.

True, they are quite good. And as another side bar item: Is there anything more satisfying then making a good tomato sauce??

You are 110% correct Highland farms Basil Gourmet sauce is the Best bottled sauce ever. and truly authentic. They have 2 locations that I am aware of both in Scarborough. One on Ellesmere at Kennedy and the other on Lawrence east of Kingston Rd.

There is a Highland Farms on Dufferin between Finch and Steeles, and there is one in front of Vaughan Mills (at the 400 and Rutherford)
