Absinthe?

Can I purchase Absinthe in Madrid and/or Barcelona (preferably Madrid)? If so where is it available?

Thanks!

  1. I never made it there, but a friend of mine told me about an absinthe bar in the old Arab section of Barcelona called "Marsella." Sounds like a treasure hunt, but my notes say: "looks closed, but push door hard." Good luck!

    1. Absinthe is perfectly legal in Spain and always has been, so there is no need to sneak around. You should be able to find it at any decent liquor store (bodega) and even some supermarkets. Lots and lots of bars would have it. It's called absenta. Wormwood is called ajenjo. There are quite a few brands manufactured in Spain and some from other EU countries, as well. Some friends who were in town and wanted to buy it went here:

      Madrueño
Postigo de San Martín, 3 (Callao/Ópera/Sol metro)

I'm just guessing, but they probably close from 2-5, Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

      1. yep, marsella is the place, in the Barrio Chino area and we were there and they do serve absinthe, though now you can find it in many places, In Madrid there is a bar 9dont remember the name) but is on Calle Jesus not too far from calle Cervantes.

          Try this place in Barcelona

          Fine Spirits Corner
          Plaza Universidad, nº 5
          08006 Barcelona, Spain

This place is in Spain as well but I don't know if they have a retail shop

And if you're traveling between Valencia and Barcelona, there's a distiller, Julian Segarra, in the village of Chert near San Mateo who makes absinthe in an old still fired with olive wood.
