Pie in Sacramento!
Last week's SN&R had a snippet by Kate Washington on a new pie shop in downtown/midtown. My wife picked up a chicken pot pie (not big enough - and apparently you need to order a day in advance, and they are only open Weds-Sunday) and some fruit pie. AMAZINGLY GOOD. The owner is kind and an amazing chef ... I urge you to try this out. The crust alone is just, omg, so very very good. And the filling is light but filling, hearty without being sludgy, and FULL of flavor. 12th & F downtown.

Kira O'Donnell’s sunny, cheery pie shop offers a stellar lineup of sweet and savory pies, made with all-butter crusts. The grouping changes according to the season--O’Donnell is working with local growers to get the freshest produce to fill her flaky crusts--but on opening day there were blood-orange tarts with chocolate crusts, apple galettes, fantastic vegetable quiche, and a deep purple mixed-berry pie that my daughter smeared delightedly all over her face. I agree! I had a mixed berry pie and a lemon tart for my birthday, and they were both wonderful. The pie crust was perfectly flaky, with a nice buttery flavor, and the filling was all berries with maybe the tiniest bit of sugar.
I had two pies because the lemon tart that we ordered cracked ever so slightly when she took it out of the oven, so she gave it to us free. So you can add great customer service to their list of virtues!
I can't wait to go back for their savory offerings.
I have tried the Real Pie Company at 12 and F and LOVE the goodies. We've had the veggie quiche several times - delicious. Were less impressed with the veggie pot pie.
The strawberry-rhubarb galette was fabulous with the most wonderful buttery, flakey pastry.
While everything we've had has been good, the especial favorites have been the blood-orange and chocolate tart, the lemon-meringue pie, and anything made of pastry with fruit!
