Rehearsal dinner for 20-25-ish in private room?

Any suggestions for an Italian, French or steakhouse restaurant which has a private room for such a small group of folk? Maybe one with a private balcony overlooking main restaurant? It must be in Manhattan. Unfortunately the dinner is happening on an early June Friday night, albeit early evening. Plus we're on a budget of about $50 to $60 per person including tax and service but exclusive of wine etc and there will be some kids attending, aged 3-14. Thanks.

Not really Italian, French or steakhouse, but you might check out the private room at Jane on Houston Street. It holds 40 people and the price might be right.

Thanks for your input, Valerie and RGR.
      I'll check them all out.
Planning a wedding is such a nightmare....I'm British and we don't do the "rehearsal dinner" malarky back home so all this is new to me :-)

I had my rehearsal dinner a few years ago downstairs at Jane. Don't recall much in the way of details of price, etc., but we did have a great time and were very happy with the service.

Two French restaurants that have good food, private spaces that can accommodate 20-25 people, and prices that would fit your budget: La Petite Auberge and Rene Pujol.

Keens has excellent food and unmatchable old NY ambiance. There are several gorgeous private rooms, one of which, the Lily Langtry, would be perfect for a party your size. Of course, the big question is whether they can do something within your budgetary constraints. The only way to find out is to give them a call.

I just attended a private dinner in the back room of Il Valentino restaurant on 56th between 2nd and 3rd aves., it was just right for that many people and would probably be reasonably priced.

I was just at a really nice 25 person party in a private room at Arte Cafe. They were gracious, food was good, bill was moderate. The room isn't breathtaking, but within your budget I think it's a good bet.

Tony DiNapoli's on 2nd Ave on the 80's has a private room which should work for you group. Italian, family style (sharing) dishes. Carmines-esque.

We had ours at Petite Auberge (mentioned above). Five children ages 7 to 2 (we brought in chicken nuggets) and 15 adults. It was great--worked really well. Food and service were good. I didn't pay and wasn't involved in the planning, so can't speak to that.
