Best Falafel on Main Street

johnk Mar 14, 2007 09:20 AM

Haven't been to the Israeli places on Main Street south of the LIE in a while.
Looking for a nice falafel and shwarma place.
Thanks,
JK

John K, you showed me the way to Cascan cheesecake, for this I am eternally grateful. I wish I could repay you in kind here, however, all of my infromation re this area is second-hand, I've never been. Here's what I've heard:
Shwarma: There is much debate over who is King of the area, Grill Point (Jewel and Main), or Pita Hot (on Main a few blocks north, I think). From what I've read, you can't go wrong in either place.
Falafel: People seem to rave about a place called Naomi's Pizza and Falafel--also on Main Street, near queens college. The two aformentioned plces hould have good falafel too.
I live in nearby forest hills and get my shwarma from a plce called On the Grill--it's on north side of QB, right off 67th avenue. They make a great shwarma wrap.

I second Grill Point for Shwarma and Naomi's for Falafel. Both are kosher places so they won't be open on Friday nights or Saturdays.

Off of main street on Union Turnpike --still #1 in my book for falafel is Hapisgah. --make sure you get their hot sauce, and their spicy fried eggplant salad is great.

          Janie,
Union and where? Union and Main? While riding the 46 bus, I have noticed a brightly lit corner joint on Union, but I don't think it's on Main. Is the place you're mentioning in a little shopping center?

hapisgah is in a teeny shopping center - next to a nail place and a 99 cent store (or maybe it's called family dollar?)
and "on the grill" is great

            http://www.hapisgah.com lunch specials are good

            From Long Island:
Take the L.I.E. to exit 23 main street. Make a left on main street continue till Union Turnpike. Make a left. After one light you will see us on your left side.
            or
Take Grand Central West. Exit at 168 st. Make a right. At 164 st. make another right. Continue until Union Turnpike. Make a left. Pass 149 st. we are on your right.

yes, we get takeout alot from there, a much better deal if you just want falafel and salads, then eating there...they give you larger quantities on takeout, and it's less expensive...get the spicy fried eggplant, hummus, hot sauce, tahini, falafel, tomato eggplant (turkish eggplant), and their pita---the israeli salad isn't too great, very bland, and often soggy---be prepared for a long wait on Sunday evening..,their busiest time..
