Newly transplanted Buffalonians looking for the best rice pudding in SF--tried a couple of places in our Sunset neighborhood, but they've been heavy on the pudding, lean on the rice. Recommendations?

How funny. I have a friend who always says she doesn't have a sweet tooth, she has a sweet fang.

I have a couple of friends who rave about the retail rice pudding by Cosy Shack. I know Real Foods grocery stores carry it. I bought a container once per their enthusiasm. I had 3 bites and let it spoil in the fridge. I guess it is one of those foods you had to grow up eating.

I totally agree about Cosy Shack (with your friend) rice pud.

It's gummy, but I love it. The taste is fresh and, with cold milk poured over it, the gummy and runny compliment each other to make a heavenly dessert.

At least I don't like Cheez Whiz or Twinkies!

I too love the Kozy Shack puddings, and if you can find them the sugar free ones are terrific. The tapioca made with Splenda tastes like my Grandmother's, only I don't have to pick out any cat hair!

Oh yeah, the chocolate sugar-free Kozy Shack is really good. My dad was put on a diabetic diet at the hospital for a day by mistake and I got to try it then. It was better than the regular pudding made by the hospital kitchen, once he got switched back.

The Helmand (an Afghani restaurant in North Beach) has an interesting rice pudding. This is a great restaurant with good prices.

Zarzuela (Spanish restaurant on Union and Hyde) has a good rice pudding as well (arroz con leche), but I can't recommend the restaurant as the rest of the food is inconsistent.

i bet you're thinking about the rice pudding at the Towne and Kosta's. (ya, i'm transplanted too)

I agree with your judgments of rice pudding here--too pudding-y for our tastes.

by the way, did you like yours with raisins or without?

Altho not SF and not a restaurant (despite the luscious picnic fare-fried chicken, salad bar, olive bar, deli sandwiches supreme) ---try Sonoma Market's rice pudding in their deli section. It is the richest, creamiest, full of rice and raisins. A MUST EAT!

Don't know if you'll see this, but I had a terrific rice pudding at Britt-Marie's. It is not in SF, but on the border of Berkeley in a town called Albany. Good place to get to know anyway as this is a food intensive area.

Anyway the pudding was warm and each grain of rice had absorbed the maximum amount of milk that it could absorb. There was slight tang and I asked if there was a little sour cream in it and the cook said it was just rice, milk snd sugar. There was a touch of cinnamon and a tiny bit of orange peal. No raisins.

Each bite was warm, soft without mushy and almost velvety smooth.Yet the rice retained it's identity without the pudding overwhelming it.

This restaurant is still using the same recipes it used when it opened a couple of decades ago. When it was sold twenty years ago, the recipes were sold with it.

This is the homiest, most comforting rice pudding I have ever had. It is not amazing. It is not stellar. It is just good. Damn good.

There are a lot of culinary wonder dishes and there are many very tasty foods.

There aren't that many plain old damn good dishes though.
