I was wondering if airlines now prohibit transporting the self heating meals on airplanes because the heating mixture contains magnesium, which is flammable. I haven't heard anything, but I was curious if the airlines have any sort of new restrictions on this product.

Being an ex airline pilot, I would certainly hope someone would stop you from bringing it aboard. The last thing anyone wants on an aircraft is something that can catch on fire. In-flight fires are the most dangerous thing I can think of. Leave it at home, PLEASE.

Put it this way: if they won't let you on with a 4 oz jar of peanut butter, do you really think they'll let you on with a self-heating meal? On second thought, let me rephrase: I also hope not, but you might as well call the airline, the "safety" regs are so inconsistent and full of holes anyway, it wouldn't surprise me if this hadn't occurred to anyone yet...

And of all the things that can catch fire on a plane, the tiny bit of alloyed magnesium in these things is the last thing to worry about IMNSHO. A book of matches in someone's pocket is a much bigger danger...
