Thinking of going to the Lobby for lunch on Saturday. I know is rather pricey, but does anyone have recent experience there or are we better off eating somewhere nearby...i.e. Le Colonial or such... Is it a good experience for a shopping break?

  1. I've never eaten at the Lobby, so I have no advice on that. If you decide you don't want the Lobby, another good shopping break option is the Zodiac Room in Neiman Marcus. It is not cheap (entrees in the $15-$20 range I think), but it is a lovely experience. When you sit down they bring these incredible popovers with Strawberry butter, and they serve a little cup of consomme. I think its worth going for the popovers and consomme alone. The food is also really good. They have some great, creative salads (I had a salad served with a duck confit strudel once that was fantastic) and my sister swears by the mini-sandwich trio. If you decide to go, make sure to make reservations ahead of time, it gets full on Saturdays at lunch.

    1. I have eaten at the Lobby (in the Peninsula) for dinner several times in the past year or so. Each time, I have been greatly impressed. The food was consistently excellent. The setting is also very nice, with the high ceilings and one wall of floor-to-ceiling windows. The service was amazing, one of the two most memorable service experiences I have had in the Chicago area in recent years (the other was at Everest).

Of course, there are many, MANY restaurants in the immediate vicinity, including some "destination" type places that are excellent. It's nice to have so many great choices in Chicago.
