Lunch at FISH - Sausalito
Lunch today was clam chowder, 6 Sweetwater oysters on the half & fish and chips.
Word to the wise: Stay away from the white clam chower. More potato than anything else, it tasted mainly of bacon. Not the best, or even half best, I've had. Grade: D-
Oysters were from Hog Island, and tasted good enough, but none melted in my mouth like the freshest and best. Mignonette was OK. Grade: B-
Fish 'n' chips were fairly good. Chips were cooked crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Fish was flaky and firm - their own tartar sauce was mild; not dominated by pickle. Grade: B
$63 for two plus $10 tip. Service was good, but I'll search for bettter chow before eating there again.
Gotta agree with Waterboy.
I followed the advice of Patricia Unterman's book and went to FISH this weekend. Crab roll was bland. Burger was overly charred. Nice fries. Decent flavor to the chowder. Excellent tuna sandwich. Ice tea and a tiny little beer. $60.
Beautiful setting on a glorious day.
To sum up, I should have read the reviews on this site first. Disappointed (for the first time) in Unterman's book.
I'm curious what you feel the fish and chips lacked to not be an A. I thought they were the best I've ever had. Of course our tasters may be different as might be the product at different times, but your description fit my memory except for the B. I ate the fish with malt vinegar and the chips (loved the full skins) with the tarter sauce :-)

The fish was somewhat soggy with oil and it was a touch overcooked; firm. Tartar sauce lacked punch; very mild. The fries seemed freshly cooked, as was the fish. Fries more impressive than other places. Quite good, but shy of an A.
I don't remember my fish being at all soggy with oil, so they may vary a bit.
About a week after that meal, I was in downtown Sausalito and had the poor judgment to have fish & chips at the white building that also has Lapperts ice cream. Ugh. The crust of the fish was so tough it almost took a saw to get through it. Terrible even if less than 1/2 the price of Fish's $18 version.
