Hazelnut fans: Freddy Guy is THE Guy
If you love hazelnuts, like I do, 'inna da shall o outta da shell', you know the incredible dissapointment when you get a stash of either kind, are happily munching away, and yowzer!! e-e-e-w-w-w!! a rancid one! Phutah! phlehhh! o-o-wwee. Quick gimme something to rinse away the flavor. Bummer.
Last year someone here recommended Freddy Guy from Monmouth, Oregon. I ordered from the website, and got two bags of roasted hazelnuts. They went into holiday pastries and just now, we finished off the very last few by the handful. To the last one (they've been refrigerated) they were sweet and delicious as can be. Crunchy yet with a soft buttery tooth, they are the best.
Just wanted to give an credit where it is due. Thanks, Freddy.
Greetings from Portland. I'm a native, so hazelnuts, er, filberts as we call them, are in my bloodstream. I eat them almost daily. While Freddy Guy's are good and I sometimes get them at the local farmers' markets, there are several smaller growers who are far better in quality and taste. Unfortunately they are the little guys, so their volume and distribution abilities just can't match up to Freddy's.
you lucky dog, you! sort of like my area with the backyard Haas avocado growers. They are the best.
Can share some of these sources? I was very impressed with FG as being so much better than anything I can get at any health food store or Trader Joe's (which are pretty bad) but would like to know of any other good sources you might recommend. Sounds like they are pretty seasonal? Thanks for your input.
