Hi all,
I'm moving to the outer Sunset soon, and while I know where the good markets are in the East Bay, I have no idea where to find good produce in the city. Any suggestions? thanks!

Irving Street for 6 or 8 blocks west of 19th Avenue has plenty of food shopping and restaurants. Many are Asian. There is a sizeable produce market at Irving & 22nd.

I'll second this part of Irving for great, cheap produce. The shop at Irving & 22nd is Arab owned I think, based on the turkish delight, cans of foul, and good feta cheese selection.

Other good produce options: there's a lovely market at 15th and Taraval and a coop, the Inner Avenues grocery, on Judah around 41st.

This store is pricey but very clean and good selection of produce. (Keep asking if they have the Wilson naval oranges -- they are from Riverside and so very incredible. This crop is later than the usual oranges.) I shop here but not for meats, only buy from Bryan's butcher shop on Calif near Laurel. If you're at Andronico on Monday or Thurs until 2pm, try to find and say hello to Herb -- he stocks the shelves and he's worked there since 1966 and he's 104 YEARS OLD. Really! And he has all his wits about him, looks about 75.

I like the El Chico Produce Markets. They provide a good selection of fruits and vegetables including many used in Latin dishes -- good prices, too. El Chico Produce Market #3 is in the outer Sunset at 1735 Noriega Street (between 24th Ave & 25th Ave.) And, by the way, these markets sell really good queso fresco cut from a big round at the counters, and they also sell La Palma handmade corn tortillas. And they have good butchers and a nice pan-Latin selection of groceries.

East of the intersection of 22nd and Irving is a smaller Green Grocer. I am not sure of the exact name of the shop it may just have 22nd in the name. But the owner is Greek, has nice produce and a good selection of Greek items (dolmas, feta, olives). My husband used to live in Greece and in the Middle East. It's next to Sunrise Deli - best falafel in the city.

If you love Falafels a tip would be go to store to pick up the tomatoes, cucumbers, pita bread, etc. for your "falafel sandwich", then order about a dozen or so of the falafel balls from Sunrise next door. Take all the stuff home and feast on your make your own (fill your pita the way you like it) falafel and enjoy. A easy idea for a party and it's particularly good for vegitarian friends. Yum!
