Expanding Just One

Amuse Bouches Mar 10, 2007 03:02 PM

I don't know if this has been addressed already, but when I'm viewing a thread, I'd love the option to just expand one or two of the collapsed replies instead of expanding them all. Often if there's a new reply to a thread, it's responding to a previous comment, and I'd like to see what it's replying to. Expanding all gets me lost on long threads, but I'd love the option to pick just the one I'd like to expand.

Just click on the posters name for the reply or replies you want to expand and just those will open.

To add to what Tony mentioned--clicking anywhere inside the bar that remains of a collapsed post should expand it, not just the name.

That appears to be true only for bars that contain a "re:" and an up-pointing arrow.

I just tried Jacquilynne's method on replies that didn't have a "re:" and an up-pointing arrow and it still worked just fine. Thanks, Jacquilynne - now I don't have to have such good "aim" with my cursor. ;-D

Really? Does it work for you, for example, for the first two replies in this thread? I must click directly in the text of "tony michaels Mar 10, 2007" or "Jacquilynne Mar 10, 2007" in order to expand those posts, whereas, as Jacquilynne suggests, I may click anywhere within the bar of "ahr Mar 10, 2007 re: Jacquilynne --^" including the white space, in order to expand that post.

You can tell that something is clickable because the default pointer cursor turns into a little hand.

Hrmm. This may be a browser specific behaviour. I can click anywhere in any bar and have it open, but perhaps other browsers treat only the area behind the text as clickable--and having text at both ends would extend the clickable area to the spaces between them.

                Makes sense.

I'm running MSIE 6, fully updated. Is the CHOW target browser something other than the one with 70% market share?

Ahr. Right you are. I run IE 7.0 and Firefox and normally always access the site (and do just about everything else online) using Firefox. I just tried IE and it only opens up the collapsed posts if I click directly on the posters handle/name. Who knew? Thanks for clarifying the issue.

Well, at least IE is consistent across versions.

Thanks -- clicking the bar doesn't do it for me, but clicking the name does. For some reason, I thought clicking the name always took me to that user's profile page.

"For some reason, I thought clicking the name always took me to that user's profile page."

It does, unless you are doing it on a collapsed reply. Then it just expands that reply.
