Your favorite dishes at The Helmand?

  • 9

My parents are visiting this weekend and I've decided to take them to Helmand in Cambridge. I'd love some suggestions on what to order. I've heard great things about the kaddo pumpkin appetizer, so we're definitely going to try that. There are no vegetarians in the group, but feel free to recommend anything you've liked there. I'm particularly interested in any lamb recommendations, as my father and I both love lamb.

Thanks for your help!

  1. Share two or three lamb entrees. I've never had one at Helmand that wasn't quite delicious. And you're right about the kaddo; one of my fav appetizers in town.

    1. I've had the Shorwa and Chowpan and both were absolutely fantastic. The Afghan bread is some of the best bread I've ever had.

        1. At the Helmand, I tend to feel like it's kaddo, then everything else. This isn't meant to disparage the rest of the menu insomuch as praise the kaddo for both its taste and uniqueness.

That said, in addition to the great recs above, I'd add aushak: tasty, delicate dumplings accompanied with a yogurt sauce.

I'll also note that I prefer the vegetarian version of the kaddo. I find the ground beef topping just elbows out the more subtle pumpkin flavors.

          1. I tend to agree with all of the above. We love the bread and usually start with the Kaddo, although they have an eggplant appetizer that's also good. I find it difficult to order anything but the Chowpan, and might just order it without taking the trouble to look at the menu (unusual for me). Enjoy youir meal, and get back to us after you've been there.

            1. Yes the Chowpan (aka rack of lamb) is delicious, as are the aushak (leek dumplings) and the banjan (eggplant). I am less of a kaddo fan (too sweet for my taste) -- I don't hate it, I just don't like it as much as the other things. I like it best when I go with several friends and we share a bunch of the apps and then a couple of entrees. Be sure you have a reservation!

              1. I'm actually not the hugest fan of the pumpkin. I feel like it's essentially just pureed pumpkin. However, I absolutely loved the chicken kabob I had there, and the bread is great.

                1. Kaddo, aushak and the grilled lamb chops are some of the dishes I like the most.

                  1. Thanks for all of the recommendations! We had a very nice dinner at The Helmand on Saturday night. We started off with the Kadoo and Aushak appetizers, and of course the delicious bread that was served. The Kaddo, with the beef topping, was very tasty- a mix of flavors that I've never had before. My father was not as thrilled, he found it a little too sweet to start off the meal (not sure if i believe him though because he helped himself to thirds!). We all enjoyed the Aushak- especially the yogurt sauce. For entrees (there were 5 of us) everyone tried a different lamb dish. I decided to give the Chowpan a shot after reading all of the recs, and I was not disappointed- it was delicious and perfectly cooked. I don't recall all of the other dishes, but I know that I tried both the Korma Challow and the Lawland which were both very pleasing. I will definitely return sometime soon to try some of the other dishes.

                    Thanks again!
