TL Taylor Sultan's new location

hey, i was at naan n curry across from 333 o'farrell (sf hilton) last night and i saw a sign next to naan n curry that said sultan (currently on taylor bet o'farrell and ellis) is moving to the vacant spot next to this naan n curry branch. since i have not seen any mention on this move, i thought i would throw it out on this board and let all the sultan lovers know about this tidbit.

  1. Wow, thanks so much for that news. Sultan is my favorite indian food right now.

    1. Indeed, thanks for the notice, Sultan is one of my favorite spots as well. In a way, it's sort of exciting that Naan 'n Curry and Sultan will be right next door to each other. Maybe once that happens, more people will begin to realize that Naan 'n Curry is often not all it's cracked up to be. <grins>

Is Sultan closed right now, as they prepare for the move?

All right mateys. E-mailed the owner yesterday. Sultan is supposed to re-open on the 11th of July at 340 O'Farrell.

          1. re: osho

Has it reopened? i emailed the owners this week and no reply yet.

I e-mailed them as well. No response.

              1. re: osho

Latest estimate for Sultan re-opening is two to 3 1/2 weeks, per email from owner.

I walked by their new location yesterday at 340 O'Farrell and it is not open yet. They were working on the paint and tile and there was furniture set up. I talked to a young man in front who said that it would open in about a week. The windows are still papered up and interestingly it is right next door, on the west side, of Naan 'n Curry.

                  1. re: zippo

I e-mailed the owner, and he replied saying they would be open for lunch today - 10/09.

Anyone try the lunch buffet on Tuesday?

Here's the word from the owners, "we are finally open. thanks for your patience and continuing support. right now we have a "soft" opening these two weeks, we're open only for lunch. we have a fabulous lunch buffet from 11 am-3 pm.

                      New Sultan
                      340 o'farrell street
                      between taylor and mason street

340 Ofarrell St, San Francisco, CA 94102

        2. Does anyone know if Sultan open yet? I went last night (Sat) and it was closed when we got there at 8pm. We went next door to Naan n Curry, which disappointed, and I asked one of the guys working there about Sultan. He said that he couldn't say anything and that I should ask the owner of Naan n Curry, but I didn't want to ask given that Sultan is probably the new competitor.

          1. re: Mari

Per my post above, lunch only for the first 2 weeks, so it would be closed at dinner time for the next few days unless something has changed.

            1. re: Melanie Wong

Makes sense - it's still within 2 weeks of your post. Thanks.

Sultan is oen for dinner sicne the 25th. I have not yet managed to eat here. Any reports from visitors at lunch time ?

            2. Anybody try Sultan for dinner yet? I loved this place in it's old location, one of my go-to Indian places in the city. Was walking by the new location last night, was surprised to see that the prices have increased significantly (or am I mistaken?)!

I saw Tandoori Quail on the dinner menu for $20 or so. And the owner refused to even entertain the possibility of 'Gujarati' style food. In fact, he told me that just because one of his cooks was Gujarati, people had the wrong impression that Sultan was a place that specialized in Gujarati cuisine.

I think they are trying to target a different price level, and do not want to be known as a 'thali' destination. One of my Indian friends, originally from Bombay - was raving about the food, though.

You talked to a "he"? In the past, the front of the house has always been worked by Maryam, whose mother oversaw the kitchen, and who was always happy to at least discuss Gujarati dishes. I hope this doesn't mean that Maryam and her mother are no longer with Sultan!

                  1. re: Ruth Lafler

Talked to a youngish chap with a goatee. I did not see Maryam.

It's still the same owners/chef, but since they moved and the new location is significantly bigger they cant accomodate special request
