MSP: Zakia Deli?
Anybody hit this newish Lebanese deli on Stinson and Kennedy in Mpls? They have some American food and some food that's more Mediterranean than Lebanese. A friend got dinner there this morning. Haven't tasted anything there myself yet. She ordered one odd dish: curried rice with green olives, turkey, and vegetables. Hmmm, turkey doesn't feature in many of my Lebanese cookbooks, but it's a staple in contemporary Israeli cuisine. And they have a website. www.zakiadeli.com.
I can say for sure they make lazy Baklava! Only 1 layer of nuts with multiple layers of phyllo on the top and bottom. For the kibbeh lovers among you: their kibbeh is baked. They said they would make raw for special orders.
Looks like they are just setting up. They won't have flatbread for 3 or 4 weeks.

Interesting to see this because their storefront caught my eye about two weeks ago. I'll likely stop in sometime. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for the information! I've added Zakia Deli to my "try soon" list. I like the idea of fusion American-Lebanese food - any place that has both chicken gyros and meatloaf sandwiches sounds like my kind of place.
But the baklava doesn't sound "lazy" to me. I always thought that the one-layer-of-nuts baklava was the traditional version. Having multiple layers of phyllo and nuts is a newer variation - at least, it's not in any of my Lebanese cookbooks. But who cares whether it's trad or not - how does it taste?

I must preface this review with a warning..... the chicken sandwich is highly addictive. I sometime wake up at night craving this cruchy, garlicky wonder.
I work just down the street from Zakia and hit it up weekly. I've tried most of the items on their menu and have found my 1 true love....their grilled chicken sandwich (#1 on the menu). They've perfected this sandwich! They take one of their home-made buns, slather it with garlic spread and pieces of de-boned chicken. The bun is grilled until it's crunchy, and then filled with a crunchy cabbage salad and tomatoes. The best $4.95 I spend all week! I've taken at least 10 co-workers there after talking about the sandwich and they've all become addicted. My only complaint is that this sandwich takes longer than the other to make, sometime about 5-10 mins. The other things on the menu are okay, but this sandwich is truly outstanding.
Anyone have any idea how I could make that garlic spread at home?

This deli is in my backyard and I have only ventured there once. Why? Because I was not that impressed. There is very limited seating - only 4-5 tables and maybe some counter space. They really changed it up though - it used to be Brownie's cafe - your typical truck stop diner. The tabouli is not as good as Emily's Lebanese but the chicken gyro is fantastic. I also tried their turkey meatballs which were good - but you get 4 and they are small - and it was a special. The website is www.zakiadeli.com. It is closed on Sunday.
