How long can you leave out dyed, hard-boiled easter eggs before they begin to smell? I don't plan to eat them but I would love to dye them early. If you stick the dyed eggs back in the 'fridge, the colors run when you take them out (from the condensation).

If you want them purely for decoration you can make a hole in each end of the eggs and blow the insides out, make scrambled or an omelette with the eggg and just die the shell. They'll keep a long time. I have one a co-worker gave me. She had painted it to look like a Russian Easter egg. It is really beautiful.

If not eating them, that is a good suggestion.

How much farther ahead of time do you want to do this? As long as they are not cracked, at least three days. My grandmother would make them on Good Friday, bring them over to the Church to be blessed on Saturday and we'd eat them on Sunday ... with no refrigeration in between. That's before eggs could be toxic.

You do have some time. Boil a few tonight and leave them on the counter. See how long they last ... just be careful about hairline cracks.

How are you coloring your eggs? I find using food coloring per the instruction on the box, that Iget alot less color coming off and that fridge storage is workable. (versus the Paas type coloring kits)

You dont have to blow them out I boil them and hand paint on them, then varnish and they keep for years. They smell a bit if they break, keep turning them through the years -the insides eventually dry out, but lean to one side if left in the same spot -Good Luck!
