Shwarma in Li? North Shore? Please?

abu applesauce Mar 8, 2007 08:33 AM

I'm moving to Sea Cliff--only downside--no shwarma in sight!!
I hear there's a kosher place in Great Neck called Shish Kebab Palace that's pretty good. I think there's a place in Roslyn called Hummus World.
Does anyone know of any places?

I live in Great Neck and I think Shish Kebab Palace is not that great. I am in no way an expert in Shawarma, and it's probably worth a try. I have to say that their falafel is always subpar (imho), which is disappointing since it's right down the street.

I'm sure there must be some other places nearby, though.

I agree, the place in great neck stinks. Small portions of not very tasty meat are served in a store bought, dry old pocket pita. Three visits was enough for me.

there is a place in Syosset/Woodbury called Grills & Things....they have Shwarma and really good salads and stuff. Right on Jericho Tpke, just east of South Oyster Bay Rd.

Hummus World in Roslyn is amazing. I make a point to stop there whenever I visit family on Long Island. The shwarma and falafel are both unbelievable. They also have a "schawafel" sandwich, with both scwarma and falafel.

I'm going for lunch today--I'll post when I get back. I just read NY Times article too. One question--article seemed to imply they ony have chicken shwarma--Is this true? I guess I'll find out soon enough...

they do have a limited menu, but they do more than just schwarma. falafel great, hummus great. it gets a high school lunch crowd from roslyn high up the block. try to avoid that or you'll wait forever

Dmel--thank you so much for turning me on to this. Just got back from lunch. food was great--falafel balls and salads were all very fresh and delicious. Shwarma was very tasty. The place even had the mandatory "shwarma groupie" some israeli due who just hangs out all day in shwarma joint, offering advice and commentary on customer's orders and conversing in hebrew with the owners, with apparently nothing better to do all day. Every proper shwarma place needs one.
                    I got the shawafel, btw.

Glad you enjoyed! I went to Roslyn HS and wish that this place was around in the 90's (it was a bagel place then). I live in Boston now but make sure to stop by for a shawarma pita every time I'm on LI.
