buying honey wine in Boston?

melistocrat Mar 8, 2007 05:50 AM

I have been searching for ethiopian honey wine (tej) in the Boston area for quite some time now. A post a few years back on this board suggested the liquor store in Davis Square. Can anyone recommend any other Boston and Boston-area locations to purchase honey wine?

Look for Chaucer's, it's now available in most liquor stores. It' pretty decent (considering it's the only commercially available mead I've found) but I would definatly suggest mulling it with the spice packs that they provide. I warmed myself many nights this winter with a nice mug of mulled mead.

I think the OP is looking for a specific kind of honey wine, specifically Ethiopian tej, which is not quite the same as mead.

I have never seen it in a liquor store but I do know that Addis Red Sea in the South End carries several bottles (I believe they have homemade as well). I am not sure whether they are allowed to sell you bottles for take away - my guess is no.

No help to the OP, but Martignetti's in Brighton has two kinds of mead: Chaucer's from Cali, and Bunratti, from Ireland. Nice wine sale this past weekend, too.

Try Charles Street Liquors. I don't know for sure if they have it, but the help there is very knowledgeable and helpful. If they don't have it, they'd surely refer you to someplace that does.

The Wine and Cheese Cask in Somerville I know carries mead on occasion. They may have what you are looking for or be able to send you in the right direction. Good luck.
