Vancouver ethnic food recommendations? [moved from Canada board]

  • 4

Hi everyone,

I'm visiting Vancouver for a week, this week.

I'd love to hear recommendations for great food here, particularly "ethnic" cafes and restaurants. I understand there are large Chinese and Indian populations in the city, and that the best Chinese food isn't found in Downtown Vancouver's Chinatown, but further out in the suburbs. Obscure and out-of-the-way is fine.

The new site design makes it impossible to sort search results by date or number of replies, so although I find many posts asking for Vancouver recommendations, it's hard to find the recent ones with informative replies...

Thanks for any suggestions!

Alexandra

  1. Since I'm staying at a hotel downtown, I'd also be most grateful for any food and drink recommendations Downtown or in Chinatown etc. I like to walk, so anything on the peninsula that includes Downtown and Chinatown would be good!

What are people's favorites in Chinatown, even though the best restaurants are probably found elsewhere?

    Thanks!

    1. Just google these for the websites:
Chambar-Belgium inspried food`-go here for drinks, kinda on the cusp of a bad part of town so make a wrong turn :)

Any of the Guu's - Japanese tapas
      Shiru Bay Chopstick Cafe-Japanese Tapas
      Kingyo-Japanese Tapas

      1. Chambar IS fantastic - a must-try. If you're in the Chinatown area (and not necessarily looking for Chinese food), try Wild Rice (also open for lunch). The Sitar in Gastown is also good, reliable Indian (though if you're coming to south Granville, definitely give Vij's a try).
For Chinese, I go to Connie's Cookhouse in Kits every time - at 4th Ave and Arbutus.
