Unfortunately, cannot help you there. As for food, we've dined at the main diningroom at the El Tovar on several occasions and both the food and wine (remember that it is in, and administered to, by the US Parks Dept.) were very good. I was surprised by the selection on the wine list, and at the prices, considering that we WERE in a tourist area, and basically everything comes through the US Gov. Now, it could be that the concessionaire has far more latitude, than I had expected, but we were not wanting for much. I had considered bringing my wine up from PHX, and am glad that I did not bother.

Lunch at the other near-by lodge (forget the name right now) was very casual, but good, as well.

We stayed at the Red Feather Lodge last time we were there. Nothing special, but comparable to most other motels tehre. No food sold on premise. We were meeting friends traveling cross country with their dogs and as you've probably found out it's the only option really.

We've eaten lunch at one of the park lodges a few times...it was cafeteria style, I forget which one it was...but like the poster above we were surprised that it was actually quite good. One trip we had a group of exchange students in tow and the big hit was teh soft serve Dreyer's machine that had mixins. Never seen one anywhere else but the blackberry with graham cracker crumbs was a tasty treat!

We usually stay in Flagstaff when we go up there so haven't eaten at many other places. The time we stayed at the Red Feather we did eat at teh steakhouse attached to the larger lodge across the street. They do a western dance show during dinner. Not spectacular but given the slim pickens food wise around the park wasn't horrible.

The same trip we met our friends with the dogs we had several very enjoyable picnics. Something to keep in mind!

I think that lodging discussions are outside the scope of this board. You might wish to visit tripadvisor or similar sites for recommendations.

As for food, the dining room at El Tovar (mentioned above) is usually a pretty good fine dining experience. I have had some great meals there, some average ones, but never a bad one.

The lodges and food service operations in Grand Canyon National Park are run by Xanterra, the concessionaire there, not by the park service. They're at http://www.xanterra.com/. Since dogs, other than seeing-eye dogs, are not permitted on trails in national parks (I don't know about the paved parts around Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim), your friends might want to find some doggie day care in Flagstaff, maybe even Tusayan (sp?) or one of the other nearby towns.
