Best Chinese in West Side / Ventura Blvd.

Ever since JR Seafood (Santa Monica & Bundy) was taken over by Hop Lee, I just don't know where to go to for a good Chinese dinner / a takeout in my neighborhood. Please give me some recommendations in the following city: W. Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Westwood, Brentwood, Sherman Oaks, Studio City. Thanks, hounders!

  1. This seems to be a frequently asked question. However, I personally like Hop Woo on Olympic, just west of Sepulveda. You might also try Sam Woo by 99 Ranch Market on Sepulveda and Victory. We stopped going to JR a few monthes after they opened back in the 90s because we already started noticing a decline in their food and service. We were eating at the Oriental Seafood Inn on Lincoln in MDR for the longest time, but they closed down after the new owner couldn't keep things going at the levels of the previous owner.

    1. None, none, none, none, none and none. Sorry.

That's exactly the problem. There IS none in these areas (cities between my home and work) :(

      2. I second the suggestion of Hop Woo at Olympic and Sepulveda although the decor is as basic as it gets. They have two other stores, one in Chinatown and one in the heart of Alhambra. Assuming you don't read Chinese, the trick is to have your waiter translate the specials listed on the wall by the fish tanks which are not listed on the regular menu. Suggest trying the crab served on fried rice cooked over lotus leaves which I believe is not listed on the menu. Excellent frog legs as well.

        1. Bamboo on ventura and woodman

          1. Hop Lee has a C rating outside for cleanliness...
