A great, L.O.S.-quality dinner in Vegas?
OK, for my semi annual business trip in vegas... I have time for only one dinner. I always go to Lotus of Siam. But I'm going to try and force myself away from there to go somewhere else. Just for diversity's sake.
I hate the strip, so definitely have NO desire to go to anything in a casino. Plus, I don't want to fork out joel robuchon prices either. I'll have a car and am familiar with getting around town.
I've read a lot about Rosemary's. It sounds great. So I might go there in the absence of other good ideas. But what I'm really interested in would be a great ethnic place. Basically, a Lotus of Siam type of gem from a different cuisine.
A few years ago I asked about Korean BBQ, but it sounded like the korean bbq wasn't that great in LV. Still the prevaling wisdom?
I saw Dave Feldman's recent recommendation for Bonito Michoacan. I'd be all over a good, regionally authentic mexican place. And another rec from someone else for Lindo Michoacan. Any others I should think about? I'll be more in the mood for a sit down, rather than a taqueria. However, if the absolute best is from a taqueria, then I'm all for heading there.
What about other cuisines? Any other LOS-quality hidden gems that would be worth trying?
Whatever the case, I promise to report back!

This mall is west of the main Chinese mall on Spring Mountain. For a while Panang Malaysian (next to Hue Thai) was great for fish, but several people have told me it has gone downhill, and on my last trip, the place was empty eery time I passed it.
You might want to check out Mariana's Supermarket on Valley View and Sahara. The snack bar there has some wonderful food. It's a bit of a madhouse at lunch, but you can help yourself to unlimited freshly-made chips and salsa while you wait for your food.

This last trip to Bonito was my first; I don't think it's quite as good as Lindo, but then I haven't been to Lindo in a while, either.
I'm pretty sure the bahn mi place that lvnvflyer was referring to is Hue's Thai Sandwiches. Despite the name, it's a Vietnamese place. You can order bahn mi at any time, and this is what they sell primarily at lunch, although even then the pho is flying. I had dinner there for the first time on my last trip and although the pho was fine, I don't think the other entrees were anything special. It's located at 5515 Spring Mountain, in an interesting mall, that includes Malaysian, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, etc.
The Korean situation in LV is weird. There are lots of places (although it feels like not as many as there used to be) but I haven't been to any place (or heard of any Korean place) that really stands out.

The Michoacan restaurants have good carnitas. They actually have two styles. One traditional and one cooked with Coca Cola. I've had them both. Quite good, but there are better dishes to be had there. Birria de Chiva, for one.
I can also recommend Firefly Las Vegas for tapas. We got there very early in the evening and were quite obviously NOT in their target demographic since we had our son with us and it filled up with the beautiful people, but it was very tasty.

Lindo gets my vote for sure...Rosemary's too ! I've been to Florida cafe for breakfast but not dinner...if breakfast is an indicator, you might want to give them a try...they have a bar so i'm sure they'll have some cuban influenced libations. The cinatown area have many choices for chinese, vietnamese, malaysian, indian, etc ...joyful house gets some good press - i found the service to below par but it was only one visit, so i can't knock the place...might have been a bad day, bad moment.

re: kjs
I think I went to joyful house a few years ago. Got stuck there with only credit cards and it's a cash only kind of place. A little embarasing! Anyhow, remembered it to be pretty good.
What about Lindo do you like, specifically? Any particular dishes? If its from michoacan, I'd hope their carnitas dishes would be superb?!

re: kjs
you know, it's been a long time since I had a great vietnamese meal. Do you have a specific recommendation on a great vietnamese restaurant? Or even just a place for a great banh mi restaurant in LV?
I'm trying to remember where the chinatown area is in LV... is it up spring street or something like that?

re: adamclyde
The Chinatown area is generally on Spring Mt., just west of the strip. It extends down the road for a good while, with several large strip malls with restaurants. We like Pho Vietnam and Pho Saigon 8 for Vietnamese; there is also a great fast food banh mi place whose name is escaping me, but it is upstairs in one of the strip malls I mention. Not at all fancy, but good. You might also think about Malaysian; there are three Malaysian restaurants along Spring Mt. or just off it and that's terrific too.

Of your short list I've only been to Rosemary's, but I've been there three times. I've been to LOS three times also. Our last trip to Rosemary's was for the bargain 3 course lunch and it was just absolutely fantastic. Great food, great service, just wonderful. I really think it's a place you need to at least try once!

I would recommend Rincon de Buenos Aires. Go for the filet mignion steak sandwhich for around $8. Many good reviews on this board. The restaurant is on the north side of Spring Mountain Road between Lindell and Decauter in a shopping center across from Southwest gas.
