Elegantview Chinese Restaurant
We were taken to this place last night for the first birthday of my BF's nephew - terrific food! We had a ridiculous amount of food (beef tenderloin on a sizzling plate, seafood chow mein, beef with ho fun noodles, stir fried shrimp and veggies, boneless chicken w/ chilies), but without question the standout dishes were the salt and pepper squid (nice balance between salty and spicy, not greasy at all despite being fried, and the squid was still incredibly crunchy even after they'd been on the table for 20 minutes) and some sort of braised eggplant dish with pork.
The only dish that disappointed the table was the salt fish fried rice. I'd never had it before, but was informed by a number of my companions that there wasn't enough salt fish...frankly, there was plenty in it for me!
Well, perhaps the fried rice wasn't the only thing...our party was half chinese, half various-other-ethnicities - and without exception, the non-chinese half of the party was not excited by the sweet green bean soup for dessert (although i understand from my sister-in-law that it was a fine example of the genre). It was quite unusual...sort of had the texture of a thick barley and lentil soup, and I think I would have quite enjoyed it if it had been savory rather than sweet. I suspect it's an acquired taste.
Anyway - I was very, very happy, and exceptionally full, when we left. :)
It's at Vic Park and McNicoll.
