Finally! Serious Chinese in SLC...

After a couple of attempts over the last 8 years we'd pretty much given up on finding quality Chinese in town similar to what we used to find in LA's Chinatown (asking too much?)

Anyhoo...glad to report that we've finally got a spot worth fully exploring. The City Weekly review of Szechuan Garden in Sandy was very encouraging with its mention of a master chef and real Chinese dishes (chicken feet, tripe, loofah, etc)

The restaurant is in the strip mall at 1300 E and 8600 S, located right next to Taste Of Punjab, another excellent ethnic eatery.

The menu is extensive, with plenty of things we'd never heard of before. We started with a scallion pancake appetizer that was excellent...a kind of Chinese quesadilla with a subtle, fresh scallion taste.

We also ordered Shrimp In Pork Special Sauce, Broccoli With Szechuan Garlic Sauce and Sa Cha Beef. Everything was delicious. Only complaint is the breading on the shrimp was very floury, a bit too much, and not quite enough heat in the deep fryer. Other than that everything was very impressive. The sauces were rich, complex and unlike anything we'd tasted before in Chinese cuisine. Ingredients were fresh and of high quality, servings were generous and prices were right. With a glass of wine and a 22 oz. beer we were out for about $45 including tip.

The offer some set multiple person dinners that appear to be an excellent value...the dinner for 4 was $68 and included some of their more exotic sounding offerings.

As with Taste Of Punjab next door, service is not the strong suit. But the food is so good we will gladly overlook service shortcomings as we work our way through the menu, though probably not the chicken feet, tripe and loofah.

  1. the tripe is actually pretty good...as far as tripe goes. next time you go there, start off with the scallion pancakes and then go for the ground pork with the pickled long beans. quite good.

    1. duh, just realized you actually did try the scallion pancake. my bad!

      1. Also, the Dan Dan Noodles are excellent there. Very spicy, nothing like the American-ized version at places like P.F. Changs.

        1. That's ok...they're so good they're worth a second mention!
