Driving from Ca to Chicago, anywhere I should stop?

Just looking for where the locals like to eat. Any ideas from Monument Valley on? Will probably take 40 east. Any ideas on Oklahoma City, Wichita, Kansas City, St. Louis? Reason for trip is St. Pat's in Chicago. Ideas on best place to watch the parade? Polish delis in Chicago? Any good pierogies on the way? Thanks. G

This is kind of an enormous topic, and definitely an enormous area. You might consider updating the topic title to mention the specific cities and routes you're planning to take. For example, I was going to suggest options along I-80 in Nebraska and Iowa, but you're definitely not going to be anywhere near there.

Just a suggestion to get more responses.

I recently did the drive from Southern California via the shortest route, via Albuquerque, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, St Louis. (Wichita and Kansas City are out of the way.) I stayed for an extra day in Albuquerque, and had two wonderful dinners there, one with local/regional cuisine at Prairie Star ( www.santaana.org/prairie.htm ) and one with more typical fine dining food at Artichoke Cafe ( www.artichokecafe.com ). Other Chow highlights were going to Old Town Albuquerque and getting biscochitos at the Rolling in Dough Bakery and Cafe, and tastings at the St. Clair Winery tasting room nearby. For dining recommendations in Chicago itself, ask on the Chicago board. But don't ask about where to watch the parade; the Chowhound Team frowns upon discussions about topics other than food (sorry!).
