Restaurants in Istanbul

Hi there. My mom is going to be in Istanbul for 2.5 short days and would like restaurant/food suggestions. She is staying in Sultanahmet, but is willing to travel. She and her friend are adventerous eaters and like to find unusual ingredients (to taste and to take home). Thanks!

  1. Do not miss the spice bazaar (also known as the Egyptian bazaar). Buy tons of stuff: saffron; pul biber (a lovely mellow red pepper); gorgeous gigantic raisins; double roasted pistachios; unlabelled jars of delicious pomegranate molasses; etc., etc., etc. Many of the stalls will vacuum pack the products for you. Outside stalls in surrounding streets are very often much cheaper than the inside stalls. This bazaar is right near the Galata Bridge - walking distance from anywhere in Sultanhamet.

    1. Try Hamdi Et Lokantaları (Tahmis Cad. Kalçın Sok. No: 17 Eminönü İstanbul Tel : 0212 528 03 90) which is very close to Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar). Their terrace has a wonderful view of the Haliç (Golden Horn) and you are advised to make a reservation if it is a weekend and to secure a table with a good view. You can also taste the delicious mezes and Turkish wine in this restaurant. This recommendation is based on a visit about a year ago.
