I'm curious about the replies you get vis a vis the quality of the sushi as I've only seen sushi consumed at good places with beer, sake or white wine. I would think the hard alcohol would tend to impair the taste buds, diminishing the sushi experience.

I agree that all the good sushi places I've been to are beer/wine/sake only but the emphasis for this outing is more party-oriented rather than cuisine. Thanks for the response though.

Best of luck in your search. Maybe you'll offer us another perspective on sushi than what we usually get (sometimes a little too purist).

I was going to say Mosun...which is quite the scene down there. But I was also going to add that it's not very good...the first time we went it seemed ok, the 2nd time was just horrible and they had no idea what they were doing- and we actually sat at the sushi bar that time. Never again.

i've been to mosu 2x and yep, the palce is defintiely a scene. however, i gotta say, i went in with little to no expectations and was completely satisfied both times. if you go, sit at the sushi bar and ask for toshi (or was it yoshi?), he is great and has a secret stash of goodies he serves to his customers.

i seriously had the best mirugai ever at mosun.

Ten Asian Bistro by John Wayne Airport has a full bar, but their sushi is definitely second or third tier compared to what we normally talk about as sushi bars here. It's a more americanized, lounge type place, that also becomes a nightclub.

Matsu in Huntington beach has a full bar/lounge area. I've enjoyed many party-oriented evenings here. Personally, I think their fish quality is pretty good, not the best, but pretty good. However, I've seen that others on this board have differing opinions about matsu's sushi.

Bluefin in Crystal Cove has a full bar. If we forget to make reservations and have to wait, we often start w/ a Martini there. Also...Champagne with sushi is really quite good.

Thanks to all the replies. We actually went to Kitayama. The food was OK but not very satisfying overall. My girlfriend really liked the tuna summer roll, which is served without rice. I definately would NOT recommend the steamed dumplings as they tasted like frozen dumplings and lacked flavor. It was my first time eating here and got the impression that the non-sushi dishes are the way to go.

I would really like to try Bluefin as it has the highest Zagat rating for food out of ALL the restaurants in the LA Metro Area (even better than Urasawa). It seems a bit pricey so I will probably save for a special occaision. Till next time!

champagne and sushi sounds scrumptious... never would have thought! =p

but i wouldn't want to "impair my tastebuds"
