Heading up to Point Reyes area again this weekend and remembered a post about a place for picnic supplies but cannot for the life of me find the post, it was recent- in the last couple of months ??

I tried "point reyes" "picnic" "inverness" and every variation therein, including each alone, but can't find it....AGHHHH, does anyone remember the post or how I might find it ??

I think it mentioned both a place to get picnic supplies and/or a deli but I can't remember exactly???

I'll bet it's Tomales Bay Foods and the Cowgirl Creamery in Point Reyes Station, at 80 4th Street.

I think you're right. It's the place to get excellent cheeses, fruits and they have that little wine shop in back too (featuring local and organic wines.) If you take a short walk down the main street, there is the Bovine bakery that can be hit or miss, but they have some decent chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

gonna be in SF in mid july. Is point reyes a good place to picnic. I was thinking about packing one for our trip from SF to Napa. Maybe stopping at Muir Woods, Marin Highlands or Point Reyes? Any preference?

Point Reyes is huge - yes, it's a beautiful place to picnic and hike and drive around, but may be too much if you just want a quick picnic. Muir Woods is lovely - no real place to picnic though, I don't think. Marin Headlands has several places to stop and picnic - and a GREAT view of the bridge and city.

I don't know where you're coming from, but know that the Point Reyes area can be foggy, windy, and cold in the summer. Or sunny and warm. But you need to have clothes for both.

As others mentioned, I too make a point of stopping by Cowgirl Creamery for a selection of excellent cheeses. There is also a little produce stall next to the cheese counter and some nice prepared foods in the back. On the main drag through town, across from the bakery, you'll find a grocery store that also can help fill your picnic basket. They also barbeque oysters out in front on the weekend, so be sure to stop by.

Indian Peach Foods in Point Reyes (in the same little barn-type building as Cowgirl Creamery) is the place to go - everything is excellent - local, etc. I know it's not picnic-appropriate, but their Niman Ranch hot dogs are fantastic, and they have Straus ice cream too... also roast lamb sandwich, fig salad, salami... I could go on.

If you're interested in cheese-making, the same Tomales Bay Foods building also houses a small Cowgirl cheese factory, and offers a lecture as well as some tasting. Just call ahead for an appointment ($3 per person).
