I've never been a Balthezar zombie. Is this place better?

  1. no. imho pastis and balthazar are both better than schiller's.

    1. No. The food is not the reason to go to Schiller's.

The appetizers and the entrees may not be the reason to go to Schiller's, but the sticky toffee pudding is. In my estimation, it's one of the best desserts in NYC.

          Actually, the brunch isn't bad.

I had brunch at Schiller's a few months ago with some out of town guests when Clinton Street Baking Company was on a crazy wait, and we enjoyed it. Good value for brunch, and instead of the standard selection there were actually a few relatively unique items on the menu.

They also take reservations for brunch, which is pretty miraculous in this city.

        2. No, nor was it ever intended to compete with Balthazar, not to mention Pastis.

But the fish and chips are good. Very good, actually.

          1. Think of Schillers as the poor man's Balthazar, the food is good but not as good, the scene is much different and the space is meant to look run down - but it's a good time with pretty good food.

Spot on. Schiller's tuna niscoise salad was good, and value priced. I had a great dessert there (the sticky pudding or apple something?). Sometimes the service is slow. It has a LES vibe. Schiller's is quieter (not on a weekend) than noisy Balthazar. I've only been to Pastis once. I prefer to make their overpriced French martinis at home.
