Off Day at Violet's Cakes???

I was a little disappointed after the raves on this site...went to Violet's Cakes (Pasadena) at 10:00 AM (opening time) today. Tried one of their French Toast cupcakes, supposedly the specialty. The flavor itself was good but it was on the dry side. Not really memorable. Also, the staff acted a little flustered that customers (there were 2 separate groups) actually showed up at opening. None of the cupcakes were out in the display case or even frosted and ready to go...they told us that about half of the varieties were available if we waited a few minutes, the rest would take an hour or so. Hmmm.....

Are they supposed to be dry (maybe people like this) or was this an off day?

I really want to support Violet's as well, but my french toast cupcake, consumed within 5 minutes of purchase, was extremely dry too!

Sadly, I don't think it was a fluke. I've been a couple of times and the staff seems friendly but extremely harried despite the few customers in the shop. Also find the cupcakes to be on the dry side w/ that overly sweet frosting. The cupcakes nor the service don't make me desperate to return that's for sure.

Don't know if this helps, but I vaguely recall reading in some of the many many cupcake/bake posts that other people had the same impression of the french toast cupcakes there... someone should really make a mention to them...

I've never seen a lot of cakes in the case, and they often will frost on the spot (they keep racks of unfrosted cakes in the corner). Sounds off that you got a dry one (although, I've never tried their French Toast) -- I wonder if it was a day-old cake (since you arrived at opening)?? Did you eat it on site? I bought a bunch of them a few months ago, and by the time they were consumed that evening I noticed that one of the 4-5 flavors (the oreo) was quite dry. The others were great.
