I tried it-I liked it- very much. The albacore sashimi to start was a little cold but good. The ama ebi sashimi(a bowl full) was great. The sushi was all delectable particularly on the warm rice which added another dimensional contrast that i've never had before. Sometimes a bit too much sauce but otherwise great. The uni from Catalina was unrivaled. The blue crab roll was one of the best hand rolls I've ever had. Definitely a top 10 contender. I also like that the omakase only policy keeps the bar free of those in search of California rolls. Very good-trust me.
I've been twice and liked it a lot although I accept the criticisms about collapsing rice and excessive amount and gloppiness of sauce and imagine that the omakase could become quite repetitive quite quickly. But definitely worth including in the sushi bar rotation that I assume that most of us have going on.
I read about this place in a Dec edition of NY magazine which mentioned the opening of 3 sushi places - here, Sumile sushi bar and 15 East 15. Naturally I tried each of them out and only Sasabune merits revisits in my book.
hmm, wasn't planning on going but now i'm tempted...i used to go to the one in LA a lot, but i don't care for the warm rice so much (just personal preference) and i sort of lost interest...but maybe i'll check it for old times sake...i always loved that albacore sashimi...
