Does anyone know where I can get a product similar to the rich, dark red salsa that is served at Fiesta Del Mar Too in Mountain View? I'm not talking about the tomatillo salsa or the tomato salsa that they also serve, but the thick, smoky red chili salsa they have. I love the stuff, but haven't seen or tasted anything like it anywhere else. When I called the restaurant to ask about it, they told me it used "Chile Diablo" or "Japanese chili", vinegar, green peppers, and onions. My guess is that this is all pureed, as the salsa is not chunky. It looks almost like an enchilada sauce.

Ask them if you can have a container *to-go* Offer some $$$ - seems like it would be easier than trying to re-create it. Their description sounded pretty vague (like they want to keep it a secret)

I've tried a number of roasted chili salsas, but they're all watery and burnt tasting compared to this stuff. Fiesta del Mar is pretty pricey for the food served there (even though it's pretty good and the portions are large), but for me it's worth visiting for that particular salsa alone.

I guess I'll have to try showing up with tupperware and seeing if I can buy some from them.

My mouth is watering already.

They do sell it for $5/pint. I've noticed that the salsa is spicier some days than others so there's definitely batch variation.

come to think of it, i do recall fdm's salsa as being pretty peppy. good thing too, cuz i was pretty disappointed with their grandma's chicken special.

(boring breast meat, possibly boiled!)
you're right about being pricey too.
