Timezone support

You may have noticed that you had to log back in when you visited the site today. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we've added logic to the log-in (and sign-up) that will determine which timezone you're in and will then adjust the times in all topics accordingly. That means we're also displaying the hour and minutes now for each post.

Please let us know if you notice any problems.

  1. That's wonderful - thank you!

    1. Yayyyy! So glad to have timestamps back. Thank you!

      1. THANK YOU! Love time stamps. :-)

        1. Very nice work, where to I send the beer?

          1. I like this feature, but how does it know what time zone you're in? Mine must be incorrect, because some posts for me are showing up as 10:30PM on feb 28th, and it's only 7:15PM where I am. Any ideas?

Here's a screenshot of the post I just made above at 7:15 PM on Feb 28th. Something funny is up. It says the post was made at 12:25 AM on March 1st.

Try logging out and logging back in; that's solved the problem for some people.

            2. I appreciate the hour and minute display for each post as well as the date. The only time it *isn't* displayed is for the first post in each thread displayed on the board indexes. It would be especially useful to display the date of the original post since occasionally very old threads are revived by new posters who don't realize that the original information may be dated. By displaying the date we could make an informed judgment as to whether we want to open a given thread.

              1. Just a heads up that there are still some inconsistencies with the time stamp. Several days ago I noticed that my time stamps hadn't changed for daylight savings time so they were an hour off. Then today my times were suddenly two hours off. I've logged in and out and they're back to one hour off. The one hour isn't a huge deal for me, but I thought the jump to two hours might be indicative of a weirder bug.

                1. For about a week all the time stamps on chowhound have shown three hours earlier than my actual time zone. For example, a post I made at 9:15 AM shows as having been posted at 6:15 AM. I have logged in and out of CH, to no avail. My ToD clock and TZ are correct - no problems anywhere but CH.

I've noticed it too ... guessing that for some reason it's back on Pacific Time.

I did a login and logout, and it's fixed! Thanks, engineering team, for your great response!
